Welcome to the School of the Prophets! This first course is designed to help new members of the priesthood learn the basics before entering the ministry. Many of the concepts here may not be new, however part of these lessons will be research and writing assignments that will challenge your skills and understanding. Parts will be a reminder, parts will be new, and throughout this course your writing assignments will ensure you understand these topics well enough to teach others. It is recommended that students complete each lesson in one week’s time. Assignments will be graded within a week from the time they are turned in.
Lessons Overview
Week 1: Living the Gospel
“For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps.” -1 Peter 2:21
Week 2: Evangelism and Discipleship
“For behold, the field is white already to harvest, and lo, he that thrusteth in his sickle with his might, the same layeth up in store that he perish not, but bringeth salvation to his soul; and faith, hope, charity, and love, with an eye single to the glory of God, qualifies him for the work.” -Avahr 13:6-7 (Doctrine & Covenants 4:1c-e CoC/RLDS, 4:4-5 CJCLdS)
Week 3: Theology vs Doctrine
“Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts. For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little: for with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people.” -Isaiah 28:9-11
Week 4: Preaching and Teaching
“And we talk of Christ; we rejoice in Christ; we preach of Christ; we prophesy of Christ; and we write according to our prophecies, that our children may know to what source they may look for a remission of their sins.” -2 Nephi 11:48 RAV, 25:26 OPV
Week 5: Servant Ministry
“And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, that we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine.” -Ephesians 4:11-14
Week 6: Leadership and Administration
“For the administration of this service not only supplieth the want of the saints, but is abundant also by many thanksgivings unto God; whiles by the experiment of this ministration they glorify God for your professed subjection unto the gospel of Christ, and for your liberal distribution unto them, and unto all men; and by their prayer for you, which long after you for the exceeding grace of God in you.” -2 Corinthians 9:12-14
Week 7: Prophecy and Apologetics
“And now, my brethren, seeing that ye know the light by which ye may judge, which light is the light of Christ, see that ye do not judge wrongfully; for with that same judgment which ye judge, ye shall also be judged. Wherefore, I beseech of you, brethren, that ye should search diligently in the light of Christ, that ye may know good from evil; and if ye will lay hold upon every good thing and condemn it not, ye certainly will be a child of Christ.” -Moroni 7:17-18 RAV, 18-19 OPV
